Once Upon a Time a charming bride and groom exchanged vows and hosted a bountiful bash at a venue known as Barclay Villa. Their wedding embodied the very meaning of a fairytale in every way. The modern castle was the perfect backdrop for couple that are self described “Disney Fanatics” and their love for each other is one for the storybooks.
While Amy is a local southern gal, Dwayne was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and lived there until he was 11. He met Amy in 2006 when her friend encouraged her to meet his roommate, because he “had a sweet South African accent” (which is unfortunately pretty much gone by now.) I found out that Dwayne didn’t waste any time asking Amy out. Their first date included lunch and ice skating… then a movie… and then dinner… and finally a hockey game! Perhaps they were trying to set the record for the longest first date ever?
After that, they fell head over heels for each other and seemed to be the perfect fit yet complimentary in any differences. Amy told me that Dwayne is adventurous and she is quite cautious. I thought was funny when she said “it works out well because we have a lot of fun but nobody ends up in the hospital!”
One day Dwayne decided to propose in hopes of turning the page to a new chapter in their lives…
See what I did their by tying us back into the fairytale theme? Ha ha!
The story goes that he placed the ring on one of their cats’ collars, and used a laser pointer to get her to come over to Amy. As he dropped to his knee she saw the ring and said “YES!” of course.
When the couple originally booked me as their wedding photographer I had asked her how she decided on Barclay Villa as her wedding venue. She had told me that “a lot of the venues that they looked at didn’t have a very appealing “Plan B” for where the ceremony would be held if it rained. She said that Barclay Villa’s indoor option was still beautiful!
Well… RAIN IT DID! It was probably some of the of the most sporadic weather I had seen in awhile. When I arrived I found the groom and a groomsmen huddled under the back hatch of their truck for a few minutes as it poured down… and then the sun came out immediately. Despite the fact that we did move the wedding indoors I tried to assure Amy and Dwayne that the clouds would add a sense of drama to some of their photos and that we would figure out a way to make it all work. I appreciated their trust in me at certain points in the day and want to thank everyone for sticking with me through the family portraits.
I try not to say this too often but I’m really pleased with how this wedding album turned out all things considered. There is one photo in particular in which the three of us really worked together as a team and nailed it! I like to think that Amy and Dwayne created their very own Magic Kingdom right here in North Carolina and hope they live…
wait for it…
HAPPILY EVER AFTER!
This first look series includes a curious flower girl that sneaks a peak of the groom from behind the door before the bride does. CUTE!
Their ceremony was officiated by Kayelilly Middleton. She’s one of my favorite wedding officiants in the area. I appreciate her warm voice, thoughtful preparation, and delivery so if you need a minister for your wedding definitely reach out to her.
If you’re dream is to get married in a castle setting Barclay Villa is one of the best choices!
Amy’s dad would always play 60’s music for her when she was young so they sang to each other during the father daughter dance.
The groom rescues his bride from the castle!
This beautiful wedding cake was created by the talented mother of the groom and featured blue hydrangea flowers on top.
Amy’s brothers gave a surprise wedding toast that chronicled the couple’s journey in true storybook fashion. One of the funnier moments was when they pointed at Dwayne and said “she had brought something home with her.”
When I found out about the couple’s love for all things Disney, I arranged to surprise them with these Mickey and Minnie “wedding bells” to use at their reception of maybe hang on their Christmas Tree later. They ended up looking nice next to the wedding rings too!
These s’mores were DIY wedding favors created for guests.
I love this photo. I think she’s doing a dance called “The Funky Chicken” but I’m not positive.
