Angus Barn Pavilions Wedding Ceremony Reception (Abbey + Sean)

I always get excited when asked to photograph weddings at The Angus Barn Pavilions. I love the lakeside ceremony location, the mix of rust and wood scattered throughout the event venue, the fire pit, and the glow of the yellow lights inside. But, none of these wedding photos that you are about to see would shine SO bright if it weren’t for such a wonderful couple and their friends and family. When my clients invite me into their lives and treat me like family, some truly amazing photos can be captured! But before we dive into the photos I’d like to share a little background about the couple.

Abbey grew up right here in Raleigh and Sean is from Seattle Washington. They both attended North Raleigh Christian Academy and have known each other since middle school. It’s a little know fact but they secretly liked one another even way back then! As they got older their friendship grew along with their interest in athletics. They are both extremely talented in sports but while she loves swimming and he is more interested in soccer, they both share one deep commonality. After getting to know them I began to understand how deeply committed they are to the Lord. They both say that this passion that they each have in their faith is what attracted them most about the other.

Sean decided to propose to Abbey at Topsail Beach. Abbey’s mom shared with me that it was a special weekend because the entire family was joined to scatter Abbey’s Uncle’s ashes after a long battle with cancer in 2009. Many of the family members had been overseas for several months, so Sean felt that this reunion was the perfect opportunity to create a precious weekend from a sad memory for everyone. He had created custom signs made that said…”Abbey Rd” and “Marry Me” and attached them like street signs to the pier… then took her on a walk. She said “YES!” of course!

Over the years they have both experienced a growing desire to serve on the mission field and have recently decided to focus their efforts in China. Now that they’re married, they plan to spend the next few years finishing school and improving their Chinese language skills in preparation to live overseas. I wish them my deepest congratulations and wish them the best as their relationship for each other and their faith grows deeper every day.

I created a special surprise for everyone. I had photographed the rehearsal dinner the night before so I made a slide show that cycled through their engagement, rehearsal dinner and “DAY OF” wedding photos. I set it to a song by Katie Melua called Nine Million Bicycles which I thought was perfectly appropriate.

Disney Theme Wedding at Raleigh Sheraton (Jenny + Nathan)

On a magical night I followed tinkerbell to downtown Raleigh and found myself swept away by a young couples “Disney Themed” wedding. This was my first time photographing a wedding reception at the Sheraton Hotel and it’s always exciting for me to explore new locations. Everything was visually fresh and it really got my creative ideas flowing. Or maybe it was all just a dream? Here’s what I remember…

“The ‘Bell’ of the Ball” – Written by Craig Carpenter

Once upon a time a boy named Nathan was born on a naval base in Guam and around that same time a girl named Jenny was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Even though each of their kingdoms were on opposite sides of the world, it was either by fate or mere coincidence that they met one day. They became good friends.

Each of their families knew that their children were destined for great things and encouraged them to attend a facility of learning called “NCSTATE.” This was reserved for the most promising students in the land and was where young men and women went to train in their family profession. You see… in those days your craft was chosen by the family surname. “Smith’s” would be blacksmiths and “Carpenter’s” would be carpenters. Nathan was a “Bell” so he initially decided to become a bellmaker. Jenny was perplexed on what to do though! There was no guild set up for “Perry’s” and the closest thing she could think to do was to take up fencing. She did not like swords or digging holes for fence post though. What was a girl to do?

She had heard about a relatively new guild known as “The Disney College Program.” It was far far away in a place called “The Magic Kingdom.” She was torn between leaving Nathan and following her heart. She yearned for a sense of adventure though. Much to Nathan’s dismay she decided to join. But, just as she was riding away on her horse Nathan stopped her and asked if he could come too. “She said YES!”

When they arrived at the new kingdom they were put to work immediately. Jenny swept the Main Street in the Magic Kingdom while Nathan hosted puppet shows in a giant golf ball looking thing that some called “Epcot”. He enjoyed life as a bard and fabricated stories with strange names like “Finding Nemo” and “Turtle Talk.” Many times Nathan did miss being a bellmaker though. But, with Jenny by his side he had convinced himself that he could let that dream go though.

Then one day he had spectacular idea! He invited all of their friends and family to meet him at the Walt Disney World Castle for a special announcement during a new lighting display. He had become personal friends with a girl named Cinderella so she let him use her home (and her rose garden) for the evening. He also recruited the help of a local group called “The Dream Squad.” This roving outfit is an elite pack that grants special wishes. Well… Nathan had a wish that he needed to come true!

When everyone arrived they all started “painting pictures” of the couple. Jenny didn’t think this was out of the ordinary though. She knew that they were a strikingly beautiful couple and was used to people asking if they couple create portraits of them. Then Nathan started talking to her during this “pictureshoot.” She thought to herself “Who in the world talks while having their portrait made?” It took her awhile to realize what he was saying. He had dropped to one knee, removed a gorgeous diamond ring and asked her to marry him. “She said YES!”

Nathan realized that he was about to create the finest “Bell” that he could have ever imagined. And they lived happily ever after…

Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center Weddings (Kelly + Leland)

I joined a stunning couple for their wedding photography portraits at The Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center. It’s a historic plantation located in South Boston, Virginia that hosts special events as well as wedding ceremonies and receptions. It was my first time photographing there and I wasn’t sure what to expect.

We planned on arriving close to sunset and I’m so glad we did! The entire estate was more than I could have hoped for and provided perfect landscape backdrops. The best part of the entire experience for me was the fact that I was able to really get to know Kelly and Leland on the car ride there and back.

Leland specializes in dental procedures and endodontics and utilizes his talents in the Army. Kelly is a dance instructor and is currently teaching her students in Augusta, GA. They are both huge Lakers fans (well… Kelly is by association) and we shared a lot in common as far as our “taste” in movies and food.
