Crenshaw Hall Weddings Engagement Photos (Abbey + Sean)

BABY it’s cold outside but these engagement photographs for Abbey and Sean’s wedding at Crenshaw Hall are sure to light up your screen! I had posted a bunch of teasers on Facebook back in November but am now revealing the full shoot. I’m finding it harder and harder with each post to limit the number of photos that I share so I might have went a little overboard here. :) When you connect with a couple so well and everything just falls into place I tend to want to just keep shooting.

Their wedding is coming up here in May and I think we’re going to create a sign-in guest book with these so I wanted to make sure that their friends and family could get a sneak peak! They also shared with me that they are considering a move to China sometime after the wedding to perform some mission work. For me, the idea that my clients can take these ever lasting photographic memory with them as they travel overseas really puts purpose to my work and allows me to enjoy it all the more!

I also wanted to take a moment to send out a big THANK YOU to Abbey and Sean. At the end of our session they offered to take me out to one of their favorite restaurants…. Red Robin. I had never been there before and gourmet burgers sounded good to all of us after a hard days work. There is something about “bottomless fries” that just isn’t natural. Those two words should not be together.

Since they didn’t see me at first, these speed walkers laughed really hard after they accidentally walked through our shoot. They probably wondered what the heck was going on.

The road near Crenshaw Hall was under heavy construction and I didn’t know that you had to go through the suburb to get to the Hall. The couple was good sports about walking but it turned out to be a bit of a hike through a construction zone. For this one I over exposed the background and did a bit of touch up in photoshop to create a clean white background.

We finally made it to the Historic Crenshaw Hall. The grounds are so beautiful in the fall that I decided to take a few photos while the couple was taking a break.

Abbey was rocking some purple wedge shoes. I’ll admit that I don’t know as much about shoes as the average girl but I thought that these were awesome!

This was also a favorite traditional portrait of them. While we were walking in downtown Wake Forest I saw a cluster of trees with bright orange leaves and I knew it would be a perfect backdrop for their purple and black outfits.

Fun Engagement Photography at Yates Mill Pond (Jessica + Jared)

This past week I had the pleasure of photographing for the first time at The Historic Yates Mill Pond just south of Raleigh. Near the end of our session we also stopped by The North Carolina Farmers Market for a few photographs near the Christmas Tree farms. This time, our couple in front of the camera for this engagement session is Jared and Jessica. He’s currently working in the construction industry in Jacksonville, NC and she working on her nursing degree at Georgetown in Washington D.C. Due to their busy schedules we had to photograph a little earlier than normal… Somehow we managed to coordinate our session with the first cold snap of the year. They were real troopers though!

If there’s one thing that I could say about this couple is that they aren’t afraid to go after what they want. After receiving my name as a referral from the Carolina Inn, their first email to me was a request on how they could secure their wedding date. If Jared will let me quote him from his email his first sentence read “This past Saturday I proposed to the most beautiful girl in the world and luckily….she said yes.” I love it when that happens! All of my couples that I work with are madly in love and aren’t afraid to show it.

I spend A LOT of time on this blog and try to infuse as much of my creativity and personality into it, so it’s always appreciated when someone takes the time to read through it and get to know me. By the time we have a chance to meet they often feel like they already know what kind of a person I am beyond the types of photographs I create. They will be having an intimate destination wedding at the Grand Wailea in Maui, Hawaii and I know it’s going to be simply perfect for what they are looking for.

San Francisco Engagement Photography (Laura + Nan)

I’ve just returned from a California engagement session with Laura and Nan in San Francisco. They chose me to photograph their wedding in Raleigh, NC but had their heart set on having their engagement photos taken near the Golden Gate Bridge and the surrounding Presidio. Sure! We can do that! I must confess that out of all of the California cities that I photograph in, the San Francisco is one of my favorites. I usually explore the Bay area by foot and love the fact that each neighborhood has it’s own culture and flavor. The food, clothing and diverse groups of people create a perfect blend no matter where I go. The first time that I visited, I walked north to Chinatown and The Fisherman’s Wharf (from Union Square) and then all the way south to The Mission District. I then cut over to the Golden Gate Park and back to my hotel downtown. Trust me when I say that each block looked a lot smaller on the map! By the time I got back I was finding it pretty difficult to walk up and down the steep hills.

For this session we decided to take a car. I have A LOT of respect for Nan because his bravery on the downtown San Francisco streets with a manual transmission is un”parallel”ed… just like his parking. :) If you’ve ever seen the grade on some of the roads you know what I mean! Riding in the car with them also allowed us to chat about their background and the story about how they met. I had to fill in a few of the details on my return but this is their story.

They met many years ago in the 8th grade right here in Raleigh and were close friends for several years. They started dating their senior year of high school, always assuming they would break up before going to college. Unfortunately they did. As Laura continued on to UNC, Nan’s road led him to Stanford. They would see each other over holidays for a few years and then on the first Christmas after college, Nan asked Laura (mostly joking) if she wanted to go to Europe. She called his bluff and to make a long story short, they rekindled their relationship and spent 3 weeks traveling around Europe that summer.

Afterwards, Laura began working as a Microbiologist for a pharmaceutical company in RTP and Nan as a web designer for Facebook in California. The long distance relationship was a challenge, but also meant that they were able to take more vacations together since at least one of us was going to have to travel to visit the other anyway. I shared with them that I had a similar experience with my wife since we had to “do the long distance thing too” for a few years before we got married.

In 2008 one of their vacations led them to Hawaii and Japan. How cool is it to have those as your back to back vacation destinations? This tuly is a jetset couple! Soon after they also traveled to New Orleans and then on to a cruise to Cozumel in February 2009. Then Nan popped the big question… This time he wasn’t kidding… and this time Laura had no doubt in her answer… YES!

They shared with me that a few people have jokingly commented that proposing on a cruise wasn’t a good idea… saying “what if Laura had said no?” In this case it was perfect because they had already chatted about getting engaged. On top of that it was perfect for them because they both really enjoyed being isolated from their friends and families for a few days so they could just enjoy being together before coming back and telling everybody.

When I asked them what their favorite part of the session was, they told me that they loved running through the surf on the beach. The water was cold, but said they had a lot of fun. Laura also shared that the water felt really good on my feet after walking so much. Perhaps I’ll follow that advise next time I decide to hike through the entire city. I’m so glad everything is turning out so perfectly for them and am looking forward to photographing their wedding next year.

Be glad that you can’t “smell” this particular photograph. Standing downwind of hundreds of Pier 39 seals basking in the sun isn’t ideal. I’m so happy that my clients don’t stick their noses up in the air in situations like this. :)

These two photos were taken on a famous road called Lombard Street. It’s a steep continuously winding road that stretches for twelve blocks. The traffic was particularly heavy and the sun was setting fast so we had to rush a bit. I still liked these though.
