Duke Gardens Engagement Session Photography (Shan + Sam)

Before Shan and Sam celebrate their wedding in Duke Garden’s next May they booked me for an engagement session there. It was a perfect opportunity to get to know them as well discuss ideas for their wedding location. They are going to exchange their vows in the stone and brick ceremony location next to the pond. I’m excited for them because the lush green plant life not only looks amazing in photographs but also smells great, puts everyone in a great mood and subsequently makes my job a breeze! :)

As you will see from these engagement photos they look adorable together. I’m excited to meet the rest of their friends and family in less than a year. I think it will go by quicker than any of us wants to believe it will. See you soon!

Check out the BABY DUCKS… True engagement photo crashers! :) And I didn’t plan it this way but I guess the “sun does shine” on certain areas after all… It was the only one with the ducks in it though as they had scampered off in the next shot.

I utilized some creative toning on this photo… Not something I do to often but I thought it worked well here.

Raleigh Performing Arts Center Engagement Photos (Melanie + David)

I headed to the Progress Energy Performing Arts Center and Fletcher Hall for a unique engagement session in downtown Raleigh this week. I’ll be honest with you that this was the first time that I’ve done a photo shoot that involved vehicles but I’m always up for a challenge. After Melanie and David booked me to photograph their wedding this September, David shared with me his love for motorcycles. The Ducati 828 is next on his list for purchase.

As all of us discussed how we could possibly work that into a session I shared with them an idea for a session that had a “secret rendezvous” feel to it. My inspiration was driven by James Bond and a few graphic novels like Frank Miller’s “300″ and his use of muted colors and vibrant red. So far I haven’t treated any of the images with spot color toning but I really like how a few of them turned out. It’s basically your classic story of “Girl calls boy… boy races to meet her… boy and girl pose for pretty pictures… girl escapes on the boys motorcycle… gets pulled over for speeding… they both live happily ever after though.” You know how it goes…

A special thanks to Elizabeth from Sweet Life for helping out and for providing the fabric tulle. Also a HUGE thank you to the following companies that let us borrow their vehicles.

Hi, Melanie! I finally had time to see your pics. These are uber gnarley! It’s like film noir meets futurama. (Carrie Bradshaw, watch out!:) It reminds me of Rome so much. I can’t wait to meet David and to see you at the shower. You two appear to have mucho corazon and a lot of passion for each other. Keep it forever. Hope you guys are well. Don’t stress out too much, just enjoy the journey of wedding planning and the fun details that go with it.

Albuquerque and Santa Fe Engagement Photos in New Mexico

Last month I flew to New Mexico for the first time to photograph Kate and Andy’s engagement photographs. We decided to make a day of it so that we could photograph in several locations such as Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Los Alamos.

I had initially met this couple after photographing Laura and Nan’s wedding In January at The Carolina Inn. Andy was the best man and had told me that Nan’s engagement photos had really caught his eye. They later decided to book me for their wedding in Charlotte (in August this year) We were able to coordinate their engagement session to take place in New Mexico since it was where they fell in love.

Before we look at the photos, here’s a little background on the couple. Andy grew up in Hong Kong, China and moved to Morehead City, NC when he was 12. He met his best friends at Leesville High School, whom he’s kept in touch with through college at NC State. Kate grew up in Buffalo, NY and moved to Charlotte, NC when she was 12. She went to college at UNC, where she became friends with many of Andy’s friends from high school.

They initially met through their mutual friend, Bo at a Harry Potter movie right after they had each just ended previous relationships. Their first date was at the cheesecake factory but due to the constraints of our schooling & work, they had spent the majority of their time 2000 miles apart from each other.

It wasn’t until they both attended a dinner party later on that the sparks started to fly. They shared with me that they’ve learned to treasure the little time we have together. Since they’re in such a beautiful location they told me that they love to go hiking & skiing together and I learned that Andy is a man after my own heart and fast food is often his Achilles’ heel.

Currently, Andy pursuing his PhD in Nuclear Engineering through NC State. Kate just finished her PharmD and is currently working as a pharmacist at one of the major hospitals in Albuquerque & the state of NM. One of the things that I enjoyed learning about the couple is that neither of them completely understand how to discuss each other’s work which allows them to not to mix “work with pleasure”.

They have the ability to disconnect after a long day and just focus on their relationship that way. I thought that was kind of cool and I think that you’ll agree with me that these photos capture the best parts of their relationship and the love that they share together.
