Raleigh Winterfest Downtown Raleigh Alliance North Carolina

This past weekend I photographed Winterfest in downtown Raleigh NC. I had a lot of fun and it was the perfect event to put me in right state of mind for the holidays. I also always appreciate watching other performance art such as dancing and singing and I must say that there was no lack of incredible talent in this department.

The ice rink was particularly fetching to the eye but probably one of my favorite parts was watching the kids (and their moms and dads) squeal with delight as they launched themselves on plastic saucers down custom snow shoots. The sleds weren’t coated with Clark W. Griswald’s super slippery polymer but they moved right along just the same. The ice rink is still open so if you get a chance please try to make it out to visit it this year.

Known as a plein air painter (which is French for “in the open air”) these talented artists paint cityscapes and unique scenes in downtown Raleigh during specific events. This is Doug Strickland. More of his work can be found at www.dougstricklandart.com

Raleigh has installed brand new blue street signs throughout the city this past year. I think they are a nice addition.

These “penguins” from Broadway Series South performed an excellent teaser excerpt from their show Cirque Dreams.

The North Carolina Dance Institute led an upbeat dance number that showcased contemporary and classical dance moves.

explore dance troupe

I love the song “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” These girls from Explore Dance did an excellent job in acting out the classic lyrics from the original cartoon special. James Earl Jones and Dr. Seuss never looked so good!

girls choir singing event

The St. Mary’s Choral Group sounded beautiful and had there own set of excited groupies in the front row during their performance.

girl singing live soloist

This young lady had an excellent solo rendition… I can’t remember the song she sang though.

I didn’t realize this until someone showed me, but there are sensors on the sides of the dancing water fountains that effect the color and water patterns of the streams. VERY cool!

So you think YOU can dance? The City Ballet took the stage in colorful costumes and had some serious airtime in each of their jumps!

figgy pudding

The Raleigh Little Theatre sings “So bring us some figgy pudding…!” in the most convincing of voices. Be sure to check out their performance of Cinderalla this year.

ray walker singer

Winterfest welcomed Ray Walker to the stage. He’s starred on Broadway in Les Misérables, Grease and Jesus Christ Superstar. Being in the front row, I can say first hand that this guy has a real strength and control in his voice! Wow! Currently, he’s the artistic director for the North Carolina Theatre Conservatory which is part of North Carolina Theatre’s education department.

ira david wood reading stage

Ira David Wood III offered up a poignant reading of “The Night Before Christmas.” He is an actor, singer, theater director and playwright and is currently the Executive Director of a community theatre company in Raleigh, North Carolina. He’s heavily active with the community theatre called Theatre in the Park and one of the stars of A Christmas Carol.

michelle branch singing live

The headliner for the event that had everyone buzzing and (I’m sure helped with the great turnout) was Michelle Branch.

This little girl was super cute holding up her homeade sign. I tried to get her backstage to meet Michelle but she had to go immediately following her set.

At first I felt bad that none of these kids have probably experienced “real” sledding before but after seeing how much fun they were having, I was happy that they got to experience the next best thing. I LOVE the look on this kids face. Snow and ramps were provided by Snow My Yard.

student council christmas sweaters

Many event-goers were sporting stylish and “not so stylish” christmas sweaters. But that’s half the fun right?

Talented Christmas carolers occupied the streets and filled the air with holiday tunes. Even better than an IPOD!

A band named Cafe Mars closed out the evening with some great live fusion of funk, jazz and R&B. I had a chance to chat with Charlotte Gregory backstage and she shared with me how everyone in the band has migrated from different parts of the country to form this eclectic group of musicians.

Tre Bella Weddings / Bridal Gowns + Flowers / Holiday Party

As I asked my clients who they chose for their wedding vendors this past season, there was one name that kept coming up over and over. I’ll say it thrice so that you’ll be sure to remember it… Tre Bella Tre Bella Tre Bella! I’ve learned that great things come in threes with this group of sisters based out of North Carolina.

Last week they were kind enough to invite my wife and I to their holiday party and open house held at the Tre Bella Bridal boutique in Durham. I had not yet hung out with all three sisters in the same place and really enjoyed watching them interact with each other. They are a fun group of girls with infectious laughs and are such a pleasure to work with. If you’re getting married and they’re available please don’t hesitate to book them.

It was great seeing some old freinds and connecting with some new one’s. Happy Holidays to all and I look forward to working (and playing) with everyone next year!

Duke Chapel and Washington Duke Inn Wedding (Liz + Victor)

Liz and Victor held their wedding at two of my favorite Durham venues. The Duke University Chapel and The Washington Duke Inn are the perfect combination for anyone looking to tie the knot with a blend of tradition and class. But there is a twist to this particular wedding. As I started getting invited to Halloween parties this year I had to send my RSVP’s with the reply “Sorry, but I’m going to be photographing a wedding this Halloween.”

When Liz and Victor told me that their wedding date was Oct 31st I was a little surprised too, but as the date grew near and they told me about some of their plans I got more and more excited about their “Halloween Wedding.” I knew that they wouldn’t be getting married dressed as a ghost and goblin, but together we were able to capture some photographs that perfectly captured the fall weather and timely holiday. Their choice of blue and orange as their wedding colors and an amazing Halloween candy table made for the perfect wedding details.

As I write this they are jetting off on their “Thanksgiving honeymoon!” I was a little behind in getting this blog post up, so I appreciate everyone’s patience. Liz and Victor are a beautiful couple together and their love for each other is perfectly palpable. If you would like to view their engagement photos please CLICK HERE. Thank you to friends, family, and wedding vendors for making this a very special day!

I have yet to meet a bride that wasn’t filled with a mix of emotions in those final moments before walking down the aisle. The best advice for any “bride-to-be” can sometimes come in the form of a t-shirt slogan on a random college student passing by.

It was kind of funny but the first words out of the couples mouth after the recessional were “Did you get the second ring exchange?” They both said it at almost exactly the same time. At the time I said “I actually don’t know” but later discovered what they were talking about as I pieced together the timeline.

I was a Nintendo Mii Photographer for Halloween and asked the couple a few days before if they would mind if I brought my costume to the reception for a few photos at the end of the night. They were actually playing the Nintendo Wii when the got my email and said “HECK YEAH!” This was one of the resulting images taken by Ken Holmes. I’ll have a full blog link soon explaining how I made the costume for anyone interested.
